Each full moon is a time for celebration for most Pagans. However, since each full moon is during a different time of the year, there are different types of energy and also different symbols and colors associated with them. The December full moon is known as the Oak Moon.

This moon has masculine energy associated with it. The oak tree is one of the symbols that signify the December full moon. The battle of the Holly and Oak Kings is imminent and the male symbols spill over onto this sacred time.

The oak tree is sacred for several reasons. It is the tree that represents the Oak King, or new year. It has magical value, as well. It is a connection between the sky and the Earth. It's branches are spread into the sky and it's roots dig deeply into the Earth. This make the oak tree the perfect symbol of equal growth on both the physical and spiritual planes. This equality is essential for a personal balance of energy.

There is also the mistletoe growing in the oak trees to remember. This plant grows green even during the dead of Winter. The white berries that form during the winter months represent the fertile Lord of the Forest and remind us that new life is just around the corner. It is a symbol of the wheel of the year and the ever changing seasons.

Magical efforts during the December full moon should be focused on balance between worlds, strength, self-confidence, prosperity, release and beginnings. It is a wonderful time for candle magic, since candles are needed at the darkest of times. Honoring the birth of the Sun, or rebirth if you prefer, is also a good idea.

For your circle, dress in shades of white, yellow and gold. This will be welcoming to the newborn Sun. White candles and frankincense-scented incense is also appropriate. Use oak and holly leaves, mistletoe, and sun symbols for decorations. The boundary of the circle can be marked with yellow candles and unsalted sunflower seeds. The seeds can be gathered after the ritual and put aside for spring planting. Or leave them outside for the birds to snack on. Cookies and apple wine or cider are wonderfully appropriate to use for libation.

If the Oak Moon rises before Yule, try schedule a caroling excursion to help celebrate. This is also a good time to think of things that need to be removed from your life. Write these things on slips of paper and throw into your ritual fire while asking the newborn Sun to replace them with items that are more positive. A gift exchange and feast are also wonderful ways to celebrate this season.

This is a time to share with family and friends and celebrate life. Be sure to keep in mind how lucky you are to be alive and have people to care about who care about you, as well. And, as always, have fun.
