Coven or Solitary: Which is the Right Choice?
58
There are several ways for Pagans to practice their religion. Some gather with a group of friends, some groups are more formal and call themselves a coven, and some practice alone. This has been the way of Pagans since time began. All of these types of practices have their benefits. Unfortunately, they also have some down-sides, as well.
I have been a Pagan for over twenty years. Most of that has been as a Solitary Practitioner. I have many books that have helped me develop my rituals and everyday life. And, I find this to be a satisfying way to practice my chosen religion. Many people do not wish to be a part of a group or coven.
As a solitary, it is much easier to change rituals or practices. There is no one to keep you from doing exactly what you wish to do. You make up your own rituals for the holy times. And, you perform these rituals by yourself. This can bring about a wonderful sense of freedom. Unfortunately, it can also be a lonely existence.
With the advent of the internet, finding like-minded individuals has become much easier. On every social network available, it is possible to find whatever type of Pagan you choose to associate with. Just like meeting people in person, it is important to take care to not put too much trust in people when you first meet them. Talk to these people and discover what they believe. If it is compatible with your beliefs, you may have started a life-long friendship. If not, it is all too easy to avoid people when you only have contact with them in the internet.
It is also possible to find a group or coven to participate in. As with any other first-time meetings, it will be cautious on both sides. The coven leaders will probably want to get to know you before they decide whether to allow you to become a part of their circle. And, you should also get to know them and their group a bit before you make a decision. Participating in a coven can be very satisfying. You will find others who share some of your beliefs. It is very difficult, however, to find people who share all of your religious beliefs. This is true of any religious group.
This may be the path that is meant for you. However, there can be some drawbacks to participating with any group. There may be times that part or all of the ritual is not something you agree with. If you wish to stay with the group, talk to the leader about your concerns. You might be surprised at the answers you will discover. It is also possible you will meet people you do not care for. This is true of any type of group, as well. It is up to you to decide if staying with the group is worth putting up with things and people you disagree with, or not.
Whatever you decide, do not let some bad experiences discourage you from your path. Obstacles are meant to make your stronger and help you decide what you want out of life. You will make the choice that is the right one for you. It is your decision, yours alone, to make. It is your life and path. Do what makes you happy.

Thank you for sharing yet another wonderful hub. I myself practice alone. I just feel more comfortable being alone and feel like I can connect more. I've never been all that great around groups.
